How To Grow Boysenberries

Today, I'm posting a copy of a handout that was sent out with the plants that were ordered from the Knott's Berry Farm Nursery.

The hands in pictures on the front page are Walter Knott's.

The picture on the back has Walter and Russell Knott in the foreground.

The following pictures are other photographs that were taken at the same time as the pictures used in the planting handout above. Walter is in each of the pictures

The next picture is of how the plants look that are being shipped.

The last picture is of Walter standing amongst Raspberry brushes. On the back of this photograph it was written "Latham Raspberries, late summer. We prune these back about 1/3 during the dormant season." The hand writing looked like it could be Walter's. The W in the word "We" looked like the W in Walter's signature.

The Knott's School House

I'm posting a copy of the new School House brochure that was recreated in 2008. The old one was posted on the Vintage Disneyland Tickets blog yesterday. The new one is basically the same just with some new art and photos. The School House was brought to Knott's Berry Farm in 1952.

On June 18, 1960 the Daughters of the American Revolution presented Walter Knott with a bronze plaque at a dedication ceremony honoring the one room School house. The inscribtion on the plaque reads "In recognition of the value to our Nation of the eduacation provided by the one room school house. This plaque is placed on an original one built in 1879, near beloit, Kansas. Dedicated by Hannah Bushrod Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution,June 1940." Below are the program from the dedication ceremony and flyer about the ceremony from about a month later.

Knott's 60th Anniversary Invite

Today, I'm posting a copy of the invitation to the 60th anniversary celebration of Knott's Berry Farm, which was held on June 14, 1980.

The invitation was made in the shape of a diamond. The outside was a gate fold held together with silver foil sticker on which was "The First 60 Years". The back of the outside has a picture of Mr. and Mrs. Knott.

When you open the invitation the inside panel has another silver foil sticker on it and printed on it is "You Are Invited to 1980's Most Fabulous Party" and the Knott's logo. Then, a plastic "Diamond" glued on below the logo, under that is printed "Diamond Jubilee 60th Anniversary 1920-1980".

When you flip up the inside center panel on the back is a picture of the original berry stand and a parchment sheet that was folded and stapled inside print on it is the Knott's "K".

Flip open the parchment sheet to reveal the actual invite information.

Under the invite page is the program for the day, concluding with the 1980 version of the ice show "Those Wonderful Years".

Log Ride Opening Press Kit

Today I'm posting a copy of the "Calico Log Ride" press kit folder and it contents.

First up is the press kit folder itself. The background green color is the color of the paper. It was printed using only two colors of ink, red and black. The back cover and the inside pockets were plain with no printing on them.

The next three pages are the schedule of events for the day, "Operation Big Splash".

Here are a couple of pitcures from John Wayne's arrival (these were not in the press kit but I thought I would just thrown them in here).

The other things in the press kit were four publicity photos and the caption sheets for each photo.

In the picture above it looks like they're still putting the finishing touches on the mountain. There's a man with a hard hat on at the bottom of the chute and a ladder leaning against the mountain to the left of the chute in the middle of the picture. The viewing platform to the left looks unfinished, there are no railings on it yet.

I'm posting some slides I came across that are from 1974.

This "Welcome to Ghost Town" sign was on the railing overlooking the Pan for Gold and was located just outside the Farm Market.

This picture looks me to have been taken about were the crossing from Fiesta Village into the Boardwalk area is today. The cars in the back ground are probably employees cars. When I started working here in 1974 the Employee Parking Lot was the area behind Calico Mine Ride.

The holdup of the Stagecoach took place just before the Stage turned to go East along La Palma Ave.
